Bauhaus permeated my history. I’m close to craft, to architecture, to artists Vasily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. My tendency is to be simple and functional. German Expressionism influenced me: painting, etchings, pictures of Mary Wigman’s dances, Käthe Kollwitz’s drawings. I saw all that in the books we had at home. These influences go deep and are indirect. Charlie Chaplin’s silent films also influenced me, Walt Disney too, the one where mice dance in the kitchen.8

In Germany Pina Bausch and other leading artists called the new genre “tanztheater” or “dance theater.” The term “dance theater” confuses and misleads because it contains forms of dance expression that are not at all connected to movement-theater. This was the background to the deliberation in Israel regarding a name for the “newborn,” The term “movement-theater” first appeared in 1981 in the program accompanying Oshra Elkayam’s Terminal (Fig. 72). Elkayam told me about her choice of the name.
